Ep 246: Why Calves Crash Three Weeks After Weaning or a Stress Event w/ Dr. Blaine Ellison

Why do calves often crash about three weeks after weaning or shipping?  Today Dr. Blaine Ellison of Applied Bio Technologies, Inc joins us to explain the 21-day cortisol surge in cattle — a stress response that can suppress immune function, shut down weight gain, and increase sickness risk. In this episode we discuss: • Why cattle often stall out during the first 21–28 days after stress • The evolutionary biology behind the cortisol surge • How the immune system shifts metabolism during stress • Management decisions that may unintentionally make the problem worse • What producers might consider doing differently to reduce stress and improve performance Understanding what happens during this critical window could help producers improve health outcomes, performance, and profitability across the industry. #workingranchmagazine #WorkingRanchRadio #ranchlife #ranching #cattle #livestock #beef #BeefCattle #CowCalf #CattleManagement #CattleHealth #BeefProduction #RanchProfitability #Ranchers #AgPodcast #RuralAmerica #CattleHealth #AnimalHealth #BRD #CattleStress #FeedlotManagement #Preconditioning #Stockmanship #LivestockManagement

Ep 245: How Artificial Intelligence is Changing Embryo Transfer w/ Cara Wells & Jarred Wareham

Embryo transfer has long promised accelerated genetic progress, but with pregnancy rates sitting around 42%, producers are forced to ask hard questions about cost, risk, and return on investment. In this episode Cara Wells, founder and CEO of Emgenisys, shares how artificial intelligence is being used to analyze embryo viability before transfer. By capturing a brief video through a microscope and applying machine learning, embryologists can now receive a pregnancy probability score — helping improve decision-making, increase pregnancy rates, and better utilize valuable recipient females. Ag Tech Strategist Jarred Wareham explains why this may be one of the first truly practical applications of AI in the cattle industry — and how it could reshape embryo transfer programs for both registered and commercial producers. Later in the show, Terrell Miller of CattleMax joins us to discuss herd management software, record keeping, and why organizing your cattle data may be just as important as improving the genetics behind your herd. Ep 243: 2026 Cattle Market Outlook w/ Clint Berry

Clint Berry (Superior Livestock) joins us for our annual Cattle Market Outlook following the latest projections presented at Cattle Industry Convention by CattleFax. As we head into 2026, we evaluate where we are in the cattle cycle — have we truly stopped liquidation, or simply slowed it? We discuss heifer retention trends and projected prices across the board, including fed steers, 550-weight calves, cull cows, bred females, and the strengthening bull market. We also examine the impact of the Mexico border closure on supply and industry infrastructure, along with the strong consumer demand that continues to support beef prices despite historically tight cattle numbers. If you’re a cow-calf producer, stocker operator, cattle feeder, or anyone involved in the beef industry, this episode provides perspective to help you think through risk, opportunity, and profitability heading into 2026. #WorkingRanchRadio #WorkingRanchMagazine #CattleMarket #CattleOutlook #CattlePrices #CattleCycle #FedCattle #FeederCattle #CullCows #BredCows #BullMarket #BeefDemand #CowCalf #RanchEconomics #AgPodcast

Ep 242: Are Big Cows Paying Their Way? w/ Dr. Kenny Burdine

This week we’re joined by University of Kentucky livestock economist Dr. Kenny Burdine for a timely conversation that starts with cow size and weaning weights — and quickly moves into the bigger picture of efficiency, consistency, and profitability in the cow-calf business. We discuss how mature cow size ties back to real costs, why consistency in the calf crop matters more than many producers realize, and how marketing dynamics like lot size can add — or leave — money on the table. We’ll also take a look at current market signals, herd retention, competing meats, and what ranchers should be thinking about as we head into 2026. Plus a discussion with Jeremy Martin & Chrisman of Stockmen's Source Bull Sale. #WorkingRanchRadio #RanchProfitability #CattleManagement #BeefCattle #Ranching

Ep 241: When Emotion Meets Discipline in the Cow Herd w/ John Maddux

Today we sit down with Nebraska rancher John Maddux of Maddux Cattle Company to talk about business decisions that often matter most — and are sometimes the hardest to make. John shares how a disciplined financial mindset has shaped their operation over generations, including how they evaluate cows as assets, balance emotion with economics, and make long-term decisions designed to keep the ranch viable. We also dig into replacement strategy, heifer development, and how managing appreciation and depreciation in the cow herd plays into overall profitability. It’s a thoughtful conversation on ranch management, financial focus, and what it takes to build an operation that lasts. Plus we'll talk about their upcoming "Maternalizer" Mature Bred Cow Herd Dispersal Sale. Then, a visit with Ted Perry (Purina) about how we need to evaluate our mineral program throughout the year.   #WorkingRanchRadio #workingranchmagazine #ranching #ranchlife #CattleManagement #RanchProfitability

Ep 240: Are Your Replacement Genetics Holding Your Herd’s Profitability Hostage w/ Jared Boardman

Are we leaving money on the table with our breeding decisions? This week Wyoming rancher Jared Boardman (Wishbone Simmental) joins us for a business-minded conversation on cattle genetics and breeding decisions in today’s market. We step back and take a hard look at how many commercial producers select genetics based on the small percentage of replacement heifers they keep each year, while the majority of the calf crop is sold. Jared explains why that approach can leave money on the table and how thinking in terms of output, inputs, and profit can reshape breeding strategies. We also discuss terminal versus maternal focus, the technologies available in the industry that provide producers with more options, and how disciplined decision-making can help align genetics with how cattle operations actually make money. Also, a conversation with Dan Leo (Apex Cattle) on Heterosis and their upcoming Production Sale. #WorkingRanchRadio #WorkingRanchMagazine #Ranching #RanchLife #Cattle #BeefCattle #CowCalf #CattleManagement #CattleGenetics #BeefProduction #RanchProfitability #RanchEconomics #Cattlemen #Limousin #Gelbvieh #CalfCatcher #Ambrook #Schaff #SAV #Livestock #AgPodcast #Heterosis #APEX

Ep 222: The Future of the Fair: Why County and State Fairs Are at a Crossroads

State and county fairs have long been a bridge between rural and urban. But as our society drifts further from production agriculture, that bridge is under pressure — financially, culturally, and politically. From rising costs to volunteer burnout, lack of participation to being a political football… So how do we refocus? How do we, in the ag industry, protect these events that tell our story. Today, Jeremy Parsons from the Iowa State Fair and Taylor Pulfer with the State Fair of Texas join me as we discuss… What’s the future of our county and state fair? Ep 214: Common Ground Summit: Real Dialogue or PR Play?

The Common Ground Summit… a meeting of 40 people across the country.  These 40 represented various segments of the cattle industry. These 40 were comprised of what some might say would be small non-influential family operations to large influential registered operations, family feed yards, or sale barn owners.  If these 40 where a herd of cows… the term Heinz 57 comes to mind. But their purpose was simple.  Find common ground and unanimous consent on some industry issues in hopes of starting the ball rolling. The group came up with 6 issues that they all unanimously agreed on.  So today, Renee Carrico and Joe Fischer… two of the participants join me as we discuss how the meeting went, how did they come to the list of six agreed upon issues, what about the big topics that have divided the industry, and was this just a onetime feel could kumbaya moment. Sure, there are some big topics that I hope will eventually be addressed, however in the meantime, and I don’t know about you, but I’ve become sick and tired of the continued divisiveness in the industry, the ego’s, the fear mongering, and attitudes of “my way or no way”. No matter your view on the outcome of this meeting… today’s show is for you.  If you good with outcome of the meeting and what you perceive it doing for the industry… listen in.  If you’re frustrated because you think the meeting was phony and didn’t address the issues you thought were important, then this show is for you as well. #workingranchmagazine #ranchlife #ranching #dayweather #weather #agweather #beef #cows #livestock #cattle #k-line #foodsecurity #unify #advocacy #collaboration #pathforward

Ep 213: Bovine Congestive Heart Failure… Are We Overlooking It’s Impacts?

Bovine Congestive Heart Failure. For me I’ve always assumed it was the same as High Altitude Disease or Brisket Disease, but in our cattle industry today where we see a push for performance and high growth, we are seeing it manifest itself at a point in time that is extremely costly to the feeder... right before slaughter. Dr. Kirk Ramsey and Dr. Paige Pratte with Neogen join me today as we discuss the concern of Bovine Congestive Heart Failure in our cattle industry.  What is it.  Where are we seeing it?  And what do cow/calf producers need to understand about its applicability to your operation as well as the heritability of that trait in your herd. So, it leads us down the road of utilizing our DNA testing ability to know where our herd is at, but it not just to add another input cost the buyers are wanting the information as well. Bovine Congestive Heart Failure. Are we overlooking its impact to our herd… to our industry… while a solution is this available right there in that DNA sample. #workingranchmagazine #ranchlife #ranching #dayweather #weather #agweather #beef #cows #livestock #cattle #productivity #carcussweights #igenitybeef #DNA #BCHF #PAP #superiorlivestock #cattlefeeders #cow/calf

The story of the Maude Family in Western South Dakota took center stage this past week as criminal charges against Charles and Heather Maude were dropped over a land issue in what many are saying was a rogue US Forest Service agent bringing charges of land theft over 25 acres of ground that have been fenced into the deeded ground for over 70 years. Today, Rachel Gabel, spokesperson for the Maude Family, returns as our guest as we talk about what’s happened in the past 14 months.  Why was it falling on deaf ears in the previous administration, what’s next for Charles and Heather Maude and how do we view this situation as an industry moving forward. #workingranchmagazine #ranchlife #ranching #dayweather #weather #agweather #beef #cows #livestock #cattle #K-Line #purina #flycontrol #USDA

On a scale of 1-10 how would you rate your Quality of Life (QOL) right now?  Today Allan Crockett returns as our guest as we rip the band aid off the question that may be bouncing off the walls of your mind, "Is this the Quality of Life that I want going forward? We take a three-leg'd approach as we start with looking at how we can generate "Time and Money" in one area of a QOL, then we discuss "Relationships" as a second leg and is our dedication to the business a higher priority than our relationships, and we end on "Purpose".  If you're lying on your death bed, are you going to be happy with how you fulfilled your purpose in life? So again, I ask, how would you rate your quality of life? Do you have all the time and money you need, are your relationship healthy, and are you fulfilling your purpose in Life? Winter feeding costs take a lot of profit away from your ranch and often we find ourselves working for the cow. So, what are some alternatives? Dr. Bart Lardner from the University of Saskatchewan discusses what they have found in their research on Bale Grazing, Swath Grazing and Crop Residual Grazing.  While these are not new concepts and you might be saying, "that can’t work in our operation". Ep 188: Johne’s Disease… the “Silent Thief of Productivity”!

It's called the "Silent Thief of Productivity"... we’re talking about Johne’s Disease.  A disease that is highly contagious and fatal, because there is no cure for it.  For most of us we assume it’s a disease that you see in the dairy industry, but now, we are starting to see it showing up in the beef herd. Dr. Susanne Hickley (Neogen) is back as my guest as we discuss what causes it Johne's Disease, the four stages, what kind of testing is available, what can we do to manage against it, and why it is considered to be the “Silent Thief of Productivity”.  But a huge concern is that the first two stage of Johne’s is not visible, but they are contagious. So, once an animal reaches visible stages, how many more cattle in your herd are infected? If you’re in the cattle business, buying, selling, or leasing bulls or bred cattle… might want to listen in to today’s episode.  #workingranchmagazine #ranchlife #ranching #dayweather #weather #agweather #beef #cows #livestock #cattle #cowpunchercoffee #gelbvieh #TankToad #BarnOwl #Zoetis #Inherit #NewGenerationFeeds #SmartLIC #SilentThief #Disease

Ep 179: Overreach or Rogue Agent? The Maude Family Story cover art

Ep 179: Overreach or Rogue Agent? The Maude Family Story

Today it’s the story of Charles and Heather Maude, a young ranch family in Southwest South Dakota that have found themselves indicted for theft of federal property over 25 acres of National Grass Lands that had been a part of this 5th generation ranch family since 1910.  Rachel Gabel, spokesperson for the Maude family, is my guest as we unpack this story.  In 55 days from a normal and civil meeting on May 1st with a Forest Service District Ranger and a US Forest Service special agent over decades old boundary discrepancies, the Maudes, out of the blue, found themselves summoned to appear in US District Court.  They were separately indicted with a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in prison and fined up to $250,000 each.  So, what happened here?  What are the details behind this story?  Why has there been little to no information made available by the Forest Service as to why they escalated this issue quickly without trying to find resolution? Why is it alarming to all of us in production agriculture?  Is this reflective of the US Forest Service or a rogue district office and agent in South Dakota?   Financial Contributions: Maude Family Go Fund Me Page Maude Legal Fund c/o First Interstate Bank, P.O. What are you doing on your ranch to make it more resilient to drought or extreme winter weather conditions? Dr. Paul Beck (OK State) is my guest as that question leads our conversation. Dr. Beck will outline three areas that we can manage with our ranches to build that “resilience” in our ranching operation.  Yes, the conversation will range from cow size to stocking rates to improved grazing and stockpiling.  Would it be any coincidence that this conversation will lead to talking about profitability with your cow herd??  It's nothing fancy today, just a good conversation about how you and I can make a difference not only on our own ranchers but our industry as a whole. #workingranchmagazine #ranchlife #ranching #dayweather #weather #agweather #beef #cows #livestock #cattle #cowpunchercoffee #gelbvieh #HallandHall #TankToad #drought #cowsize #stockingrates #improvedgrazing
