Farm Dog

The podcast about the working dogs of farming, ranching, homesteading, and rural living. Presented by Goats On The Go® and hosted by its founder, Aaron Steele. We discuss the fascinating history and current practice of humans working with dogs to make a living from the land. Our chats with experts cover breeds, training, on-farm experiences, and more. Herding dogs (stockdogs) and livestock guardian dogs are frequent topics, but terriers, hunting dogs, and good ol' all-around farm dogs are up for discussion, too. If it produces, protects, or provides for our rural lives, we'll talk about it.

Livestock guardian dogs are just built different. Compared to other dog breeds they live differently, work differently, behave differently, and – importantly – learn differently. It’s often said that LGDs can’t really be “trained” in the usual sense, but with such a high failure rate among guardians, maybe we should be thinking about training on their terms instead of ours. Yes, it can be done. A rancher can start with almost no stockdog experience and in six years have a full crew of high performing ranch dogs and be producing puppies that are in demand from all over the world. It helps to have a ton of drive and passion, like David Dagley, and to start with Annie the Hangin' Tree Cow Dog. Welcome to Farm Dog. How do we know that thing we saw one of our farm dogs do is a consistent behavior or just a one-off, random event? To be sure, we need more opportunities to observe the dog in the same situation. Having thousands of lambs and dozens of livestock guardian dogs makes for a bigger sample, as does a day-in-day-out threat from black headed buzzards. Welcome to Farm Dog. Ep. 42: Are livestock guardian dogs worth it?

Most of us assume that livestock guardian dogs are a good investment for an operation with small livestock, but how many of us have actually run the numbers? Just like every other part of our production systems, guardian dogs are not free. Do they really produce more than they cost? Does it matter? What if predation is less costly than our dog packs? Ep. 14: Dog power vs. grizzly power - Blackleaf Guardians

When you raise sheep on pasture surrounded by the largest carnivore in North America, mountain lions, and a local pack of wolves, you'd better have your act together when it comes to predator protection. For Steve Skelton of Bynum, Montana, that means his sheep live with a security detail of at least 10 livestock guardian dogs representing four or more different breeds. Welcome to Farm Dog. Ep. 13: The Australian Cattle Dog is not for everyone...and that's a good thing

The Australian Cattle Dog (ACD), obviously, was bred for cattle work. But today's farmers and ranchers don't often demand much from the breed, and its appeal to pet owners is strong even though some of its cattle dog instincts are undesirable for domestic life. With pressure to change coming from all sides, who's going to bat for the working genetics of the ACD? Welcome to Farm Dog. Ep. 11: Your Border Collie is a hunting dog.

Craig Koshyk grew up among farm dogs and traveled the world observing and writing about hunting dogs. After diving into the cultures, languages, and practices that produced both types, he found out they're not all that different. Craig will walk us through the common beginnings and shared instincts of hunting breeds and our canine farm hands. Welcome to Farm Dog. Gary Williams is a cowboy, an author, and a horse and stock dog trainer,  but he's not a geneticist. Ep. 6: What makes a cow dog a cow dog?

To Randal Walker, a rancher and stock dog trainer out of Toppenish, Washington, “cow dogs” are border collies, not all border collies are cow dogs, a fearful dog is certainly not a cow dog, and while it might tell you something about its character, a cow dog is not necessarily required to gather cattle from the Pacific Ocean. Confused? Randal will explain it all for us. Welcome to Farm Dog. Farm Dog is presented by Goats On The Go® and hosted by its founder, Aaron Steele. Ep. 1: 25 farm dogs, 1200 sheep and goats, 1 rancher

Greg Christiansen is the owner of Grandview Livestock, a Kansas sheep and goat operation that utilizes dozens of livestock guardian dogs (LGD's) and a couple of herding dogs to provide a living for himself and his family. He is also the author of Raising Meat Goats in a Commercial Operation. In this first episode of Farm Dog we discuss LGD breeds that Greg has put to work on his farm (Anatolian Shepherd, Akbash, Komondor, and Great Pyrenees) and the different working styles of the breeds. Greg tells us about his history with "gathering dogs" (border collies, heelers, and Australian kelpies) and how to manage the tricky balance between the herding dogs and the LGD's who may view the herding dogs as the predators from which their sheep and goats need to be protected. We also discuss herding dog training and the logistics of taking care of so many dogs across several scattered pastures.
